::self-portrait::

True fact: boys do make passes at girls who wear glasses.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
— Marianne Williamson

It's a very deep quote to go with a very silly picture, but I like them both. So there's that.

state of the shoes

So I forget why, but yesterday I felt the need to pull up this post, in which I photographed most of my shoes. Which then made me pull out my current shoes and photograph them. Which made me realize: I'm missing a bunch. They're still packed up SOMEWHERE. But my number of flats has definitely gone down, and my average heel height has decidedly gone up.
pairs of black boots: 5 (not all are pictured)
pairs of black open toed pumps: 3
pairs of orange shoes: NONE. This needs fixed.
number of pairs not shown: unknown

warning: cute attack

Apparently this is the new face of blogging.

These are screencaps from a short called "Raving" that was written and directed by Julia Stiles. It was a free download on iTunes some time ago, and I pulled it up today to grab these stills for you. Don't you love that vintage dress? So gorgeous.

wednesday wonderfulness

hello, lovelies! This is going to be short: it's been crazy at work the past week or so, preparing for the regional manager's visit. So time has been short. BUT I'M OFF TOMORROW. Much happiness! Anyway, enjoy.

inspiration: moulin rouge!

Moulin Rouge! is one of my all-time favorite films, because not only does it have a good story and compelling characters, it's visually stunning. A photoshoot inspired by this film is on my list of things to do (look for it this summer?), and I can watch it over and over to fall in love all over again with color. Also: Luhrmann's use of light is spectacular. I've given you a few screen caps below, but they're really only from two of my favorite musical numbers. If I screen capped the whole thing this post would be pages and pages long.

Anyway, here are a few ways you can let Moulin Rouge! inspire you.

wear lots of colors.

Add a tailcoat to your wardrobe.

Love the size you are.

Embrace garter belts.

Wings make any outfit better.

top hats make people happy.

be pale. wear red lipstick.

paint your bedroom red. add ridiculous amounts of pillows to your bed.

go on picnics.

type. write. create.

learn to tango.

tweed is lovely.

wear veils.

And a few more:
  • sparkle is nothing to be ashamed of.
  • red hair is glorious.
  • elephants are fabulous.
  • beware midgets with sandbags
  • red and pink is a good color combination.
  • the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.

how to: punkify your shoes

So let's say you buy a pair of basic black sandals without even trying them on because hello: black sandals for $13 are not to be sneezed at. And while they have good lines, and should work in theory (hello, 4 inch heels!), when I put them on they just felt...not me. So I got to work.

Enter the metal studs. These were the only ones I could find at the local craft store (Michaels) so these are what I tried. I started with one packet of 200 for about $4, even quantities of gold and silver. I was only using the silver. (We have gold studs all over the apartment now.)

And these were brought to you by...wait for it....Bedazzler. I KNOW. I comfort myself with the knowledge that they contained no tag.

The holes were part of the sandal design, and they worked beautifully for placing the studs. I started with sets of two, and added the alternating one when I decided it just needed MORE. Now, I did start by punching them in with my fingers, which worked, but I could only do a few at a time before my fingers were too sore to work. So when le husband handed me a pair of pliers, things went much more quickly.

The finished project! It took about 100 studs per shoe, and about an hour each once I had the pliers. I like very much.

wednesday wonderfulness

Ah, winter! Only what, five more weeks? With that ominous thought, I've rounded up lots of amazingness that will hopefully distract you from the cold/wet/snowpocalypse.
Ok, it's back to work for me! Keep warm, lovelies!

muted colors, quiet moments, bits of snow, a pause to breathe. Yes. I love these things right now. (As always, click on the images to view the originals.)

this picture makes me laugh

Taken by my sister. That's my doggy niece Albright.

I am going to be the craziest old lady EVAR

Because I already dress like one. No one in this town appreciates the polka-dot/leopard print combo, but you know what? I'm fine with that. I later added a vintage fur jacket because if you're going to look crazy, you might as well look CRAZY. Right?

simply lovely

So my husband and I aren't really into Valentines Day; it's such a manufactured holiday that we can't seem to get excited about it. So last year we hung out with my sister and her boyfriend and made sushi; this year I have no idea what we'll do. I can get excited, though, about taking time to show someone you love them with a little something special. Not necessarily on Sunday, though you can if you want. With that in mind, here are some simple, inexpensive ways to show your love.
Enjoy, and have a lovely valentines day!

Yes, I'm one of those people who try to watch all the films in the six major categories before the broadcast. I have no idea what started me on this, but I love it. wednesday wonderfulness, still snowing edition

We've had a ridiculous amount of snow in our little, usually mild Mid-Atlantic region over the past month or so. Since I spent two (miserable, cold) winters in Ohio, I know how to drive in the stuff. However, our area just isn't prepared to deal with it. We're understaffed on plows and trucks, and I can't even keep track of how many days the kids have missed school now. Ah, well. Only six more weeks of winter, right? Ok, on to the good stuff.
In other news, I'm sorry posting has been non-existent lately. We've been out of town as well as without a computer. Hopefully things are back to normal now!

wednesday wonderfulness, short edition

This is going to be really brief; I've not had access to my computer much this week. So I'm typing this on the evil laptop, and looking forward to getting my own lovely computer back.
That's all for now, loves. Headed to ohio for the weekend, and then back.

2.01.2010

whiM: what happiness it's Monday!

Um, I'm tired and I have a deadline to meet, but here are some things that make me super-happy to see this week:
  • We're going to Ohio this weekend! It's my youngest sister-in-law's 16th birthday this weekend, so we're driving out for her party, which has a theme of YELLOW. It's surprisingly hard to find in stores right now.
  • I've made a lot of progress on projects for le business lately, despite my crazy work schedule. Woot!
  • Le husband has finished the closet! Is amazing! I have a wall of shoes!
  • We had a snow day this weekend, and I made a mississippi mud cake. Yummm.
For now that's enough. I'm ready for the weekend to be here, and early next week I get to go to Ikea and buy things for my house! woooo!

Also: I don't know if you saw the Grammys last night, but this performance by Pink was amazing. Absolutely breathtaking.
