update on my oscar-watching

So after watching the Oscars with le sisters last year, we decided that this year we'd turn it into a party. Which means that I turned into a film nerd and am trying to watch all the nominees in the six major categories before the show. Which means I've been spending a FORTUNE at the movie theater lately, but whatever. 'Tis fun. So here's my current list of what I have left to watch.

best actor
Richard Jenkins/THE VISITOR
Frank Langella/FROST/NIXON
Sean Penn/MILK
Brad Pitt/THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (whattheheck??? I hated him in this. he was my least favorite part of this movie.)
Mickey Rourke/THE WRESTLER

best supporting actor
Josh Brolin/MILK
Robert Downey Jr./TROPIC THUNDER
Philip Seymour Hoffman/DOUBT (huh? not that impressive)
Heath Ledger/THE DARK KNIGHT
Michael Shannon/REVOLUTIONARY ROAD

best actress
Anne Hathaway/RACHEL GETTING MARRIED
Angelina Jolie/CHANGELING (Seriously? really?)
Melissa Leo/FROZEN RIVER
Meryl Streep/DOUBT (HOLY COW NO. I mean, she did a decent job, but nothing new or surprising. Also, she kept dropping into this awful New York accent and then stopping. Very annoying.)
Kate Winslet/THE READER

best supporting actress
Amy Adams/DOUBT (really????)
Penélope Cruz/VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA
Viola Davis/DOUBT
Taraji P. Henson/THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
Marisa Tomei/THE WRESTLER

best director
David Fincher/ THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
Ron Howard/ FROST/NIXON
Gus Van Sant/MILK
Stephen Daldry/THE READER
Danny Boyle/SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

best picture
THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
FROST/NIXON
MILK
THE READER
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Gosh. I haven't seen any of those other than Dark Knight. I really wanted to see Revolutionary Road, Changeling, and Doubt though. Maybe I'll skip Doubt after your comments though! lol. Oh, also want to see Slumdog Millionare.

Tropic Thunder was hilarious! But an Oscar for RDJ? I think Tom Cruise was the best part, even though I am not a TC fan.

Ha, we're hosting an Oscar party, too and I've seen *none* of the movies. It's going to be quite the mad dash to try & catch a few.

& from the previews, Doubt looked like a total yawn. I'm kind of surprised by the nominations.

whoa... i would have thought we'd have similar taste when it comes to films... boo hoo. i thought brad pitt actually ACTED for the first time ever in benjamin buttons. it was one of the most beautiful films i've ever seen... i also thought changeling was brilliant, and had a similar reaction with angelina jolie, "oh wow, i guess she actually CAN act!" ... i would say you're in for a treat both with tropic thunder (silly, mindless, but very fun) and vicky cristina barcelona (avant garde and visually beautiful), but you may hate them!!! ;)

Shelly- don't skip Doubt! It's a good movie, I'm just not sure it's worth the awards that it got. There were other films I would have liked to see there instead.

chork- I can't wait! I have a copy of it on hand, and might get to it this evening.

ambika--hahaha! Have fun! I started on this project before the noms came out, and it's crazy how obsessed I've become. Le husband is all "whatever." He does go with me to see most of them, though.

msfleurette - I didn't dislike Benjamin Button; I just thought that BP was the weakest part. I posted a review some time ago--it was visually amazing, and Cate Blanchett was breathtaking, but Pitt left me cold. I actually agree with your assessment of Jolie as well--it did cause me to reconsider her acting ability (and I loved the film) but I'm not sure that it was worth an Oscar nom. I'm really looking forward to Vicky Christina!

You are going to be busy this week! Watch Tropic Thunder next - RDJ was the BEST part of this movie. I actually hated Pitt AND Blanchett in Button - and I am in LOVE with Cate, so now you know what I think of that movie. What a disapointment...I could barely get through it I was so bored. (Should have brought my knitting, *wink*)
