songs we all should know

So I need your help. I'm burning a CD for my younger sisters-in-law of the songs that they should at least be familiar with. You know, the ones that are kind of cultural touchstones and you should know some of the words? Those songs. I know that that's a tall order to fit on one CD, but I'm going to try. So this is what I have so far; what do I need to add?
for those about to rock::ac/dc
under pressure::queen
you give love a bad name::bon jovi
american woman::lenny kravitz
u can't touch this::mc hammer
shook me all night long::ac/dc
ice ice baby::vanilla ice
don't stop believin::journey
we will rock you::queen
i believe in a thing called love::the darkness
a little less conversation::elvis presley
how sweet is is::james taylor
smells like teen spirit::nirvana
where the streets have no name::u2
here i got again::whitesnake

Yes, a lot of hair metal. But they don't know any of that. I know, right???

I Wanna Hold Your Hand? (gotta have at least ONE beatles song, although i'm not sure which)
American Pie?
We Didn't Start The Fire? (it's a song MADE of cultural touchstones for goodness sake!)
Let's Stay Together?

I could really go on :-)

Oh man, these are the songs that get played at Christmas parties and big get togethers that everyone loses their mind & starts bellowing along. Even I know the words to Bon Jovi and I never liked them even as a kid.

I'd definitely add 'American Pie' and maybe 'The Joker' by Steve Miller Band.

& James Brown! Even 'Sex Machine' gets my non-dancing friends dancing.

bekah's right, sweet child o'mine should be there.

i also highly recommend you asking my boyfriend. his music literacy is far, far, far, far, far beyond my own.

I wonder if you might need to designate a decade here; my first instinct, like Jessica's, is to wonder where The Beatles are.

Yellow Submarine?
Let it Be?
...Imagine?

What's your feeling about Simon and Garfunkel, or just Paul Simon? The Sound of Silence, Scarborough Fair, Bridge over Troubled Water?

and how about Sweet Home Alabama?

oop! Sorry -

what about Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me"? I don't know a single person who can help but sing along and reminisce about The Breakfast Club when that comes on.

And I wonder if The Cure need to make an appearance?

OH YES. you HAVE to add Sweet Home Alabama. If you don't recognize that song within the first two measures, you are not from this world.

You've gotten some great suggestions. In order of importance, here are my additions:

"Sitting on the dock of the bay" Otis Redding
"I can't get no Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
"Proud Mary" - CCR
"You can't always get what you want" - The Rolling Stones
"Sunday Morning Coming Down" - Johnny Cash
"Break on Through (to the other side) - The Doors
"Wonderwall" - Oasis
"Free Bird" - Lynrd Skynrd
"Landslide" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Tonight, Tonight" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Breakfast at Tiffany's" - Deep Blue Something
"Foolish Games" - Jewel
"Little Black Backpack" - Stroke Nine
"Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn
"Whipping Post" - The Allman Brothers
"Papa was a Rolling Stone" - The Temptations
"Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd

I've purposely omitted what(in my opinion)are the iconic classic country songs...if you need THAT list, I could go on for days. :-)
